ECEX Bespoke Bridging Stair For Embankment Place

One Embankment Place

Distinctive London riverside building One Embankment Place is occupied by PwC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) and maintained by leading building maintenance provider Honeywell.  It has the distinction of being the UK’s first “air rights” building – built directly over London’s Charing Cross Station – as well as achieving the highest BREEAM Outstanding rating ever recorded worldwide.

The Project

Honeywell personnel require frequent maintenance access to a plant room located above a small flat roof, however the only means of access was via a vertical cat ladder, using a cumbersome hoist for tools and materials.

Honeywell asked ECEX to design and quote to install a new bridging stair to improve access safety.

The Solution

The ECEX surveyor identified that a bridging stair could be installed between an existing adjacent stair landing and the roof in question to provide a new, safe and continuous access route with minimal changes of level, which would greatly improve access for personnel and materials. Designed and manufactured in “kit” form in ECEX workshops for installation into position at site, the new fabricated bridging stair comprised a steel supporting frame with non-slip gritted GRP open mesh grating and treads, plus stainless steel balustrade to match existing.  The pre-manufacture enabled a smooth, efficient installation by ECEX’s skilled site team
